The Bloom Bunch

Last fall I had a blast hanging out with the Bloom siblings, taking portraits of them together and individually. But considering that they were giving the pictures to their Dad for Christmas, I haven't posted them until now. [smile]

There is nothing like putting your subjects to work during a photo shoot! Many thanks to the guys for toting these stools from the vehicle to this location (as we were unable to find close parking and ended up hiking a bit.) You were fabulous troopers!

This past year I have been extremely sporadic in blogging, yet I have enjoyed sharing pictures and tidbits of my life with you in the cracks of time I've had to blog, upload pictures, and try to scribble something down. I love living life, loving Dan, learning to manage my home, try new recipes, read books, serve Christ by serving others, take pictures, and catch precious moments in time. Oh -- and have I mentioned my excitement in soon having a sweet daughter to love and cuddle?!

Thank you, readers, for taking the time to share your thoughts and encouragement with me over the years. Your comments are always delightful to read! I've been toying around with different ideas of doing a weekly themed post...or sharing more recipes that have been a huge hit in our house...or...or... [smile]

But on to the celebration!

The little people grow and change so quickly in between our visits home. Maybe someday we'll live closer...!

We also got to meet our newest little nephew, Asher. I forget how itsy bitsy newborns are -- and can't wait to hold my own lil' girl!

Look who's getting married!

Dan and I were headed to the airport at 4:30am to fly home for Christmas, when I realized I had an unread text from the night before. It was a picture message from Rachel showing off a gorgeous diamond ring .on.her.finger! Oh my! I couldn't have been more happy -- and thrilled that I'd soon see the happy couple in person! (Nice timing, Alan!)

And what works better for a photo shoot than a windy December morning? We wanted to get some pictures but with coordinating schedules, the only time that worked was not ideal according to the weather. But they braved the bitter cold and flashed smiles that warmed us all by their radiance and happiness. Love is such a beautiful, precious gift!

I love being in love.

I love seeing other couples truly, sincerely, and desperately in love with each other.

And it is wonderfully happy when my sister falls in love!

Dan is in the midst of completing his LAST WEEK of law school! This calls for a celebration! [smile]

He has a big test tonight, another one on Friday, and then his senior seminar paper is due on Saturday. I'm so proud of him. He has been so faithful and diligent -- not only working 40 hours a week, but also studying 20+ hours a week. And now the end is in sight!

After Dan finishes school, we'll travel to Nebraska and spend Christmas with family. Afterwards, its back to the books as Dan prepares to take the California bar exam in February. Prayers are very much appreciated -- not only for his tests this week, but also for all the studying and review he'll be doing in preparation for the bar exam.

Sandwiches.

(Those words just had to be made for each other. Hm-mm-m. Such an amazing combo.)

Throw in some grilled ham or chicken, a lil' mayo or mustard, a few slices of avocado and tomato--

well, for the first sandwich only use one lone tomato slice.

Which only means more for the next sandwich!

Grilled chicken is my personal favorite. I'm also thinkin' that a slice or two of bacon would only make this even more delish. And all I had on hand was potato bread, but a fresh rye or wheat bread only enhances the flavors (I speak from experience!)

Let the grill do its work - and wala!

Make sure you have whatever else you are serving with supper all prepared and ready cuz' these tasty toasted sandwiches are best hot off the grill.

Thanksgiving Travels...

took us to Nebraska for a week! What a delight! And we packed the days (and yes, some nights) as full as possible...

On Saturday, November 19, Dan was a groomsman for the wedding of our friends, Ben & Leslie.

What a beautiful thing to see a young man and woman fully committed to Christ -- now covenanting their lives to each other!

Then on Sunday, my cousin Nicole married the love of her life -- and I had the honor of standing up with her! Such a gorgeous day of rejoicing in what God has done.

It was also a first in that while being the matron of honor, I also did some of the portraits, too. (Which means stay tuned for more pictures of the stunning bride and groom!)

After the wonderfully busy weekend, we had time to relax with family...

spend some time at Grandpa and Grandma's house...

play a few games...

eat lots and lots and lots of good food...
(what a great time of year to be eating for two! [grin])

enjoy a Wissmann family reunion concert...

play with the adorable nieces and nephews...

a shopping trip with sisters...
(yay for finding cute maternity clothes!)

brave the cold weather for a good game of two-hand touch football with the Beasley's...

time with extended family...

and of course, talking and laughing and just enjoying the blessings of family and being together!

Thank you for all your sweet congratulations and for rejoicing with us!

Dan and I are so very thrilled and excited -- not only with the eagerly awaited arrival of a precious little bundle next spring, but also because of the faithfulness of the Lord!

Earlier this year (in January) Dan and I found out we were expecting and couldn't have been more blessed and ecstatic. I was just getting ready to share the exciting news with you all several weeks later, when the Lord called our precious little one home.

So instead of preparing for a sweet little baby whom I'd been praying for, I found myself over and over again dealing with the pain of dashed hopes and dreams I already had for this little one. My Heavenly Father had other plans and yes, it was a time of deep sorrow. But it was also a time the Lord showed me more of Himself and of His great love.

I share this with you now because it was a challenging spring of coming to a place of simply trusting and resting -- only to find myself in tears again, struggling with the loss of wanting to hold my baby!

In the midst of tears and wishing for what might've been and what I longed for, He was so patient and brought me such comfort through the precious promises in His Word as well as through my amazing husband, dear family, and close friends. Heaven is only going to be all the more joyous when I finally meet our precious baby!

And now I am due the end of April and have been so thankful for a wonderful pregnancy thus far. I heard lil' Squirt's heartbeat for the first time last week -- what a precious, precious sound! And such a miracle.

What happened...

when Dan headed off to a men's retreat for 24 hours last weekend?

My brain began spinning with ideas to redecorate our bedroom to surprise him. [smile]

I also wanted to keep it very low cost and not surprise with a stack of receipts from purchasing a host of new things!

To begin with, I had a colorful bedspread on hand that I'd picked up very inexpensively this summer. After looking at the colors I was working with, I scoured the house for other accents that would tie in. I also stopped by our local thrift store and picked up a few versatile decorative items.

and last but definitely not least, the new pillow I made for the bed. (I think it was my favorite part of putting the room together!)

I'd never done a project like this by myself before; usually there are siblings around to be co-conspiritors! I'd arrange something, and then try it a different way, and then rearrange all the surfaces, and eventually come up with something I liked (without talking to myself for a second opinion -- lol!) For those wondering, Dan was very pleased and surprised. Hooray!

My dashing law student is almost done with school (he graduates in December! I'm so proud of him! Three cheers!) which means he no longer needs the Amazon gift cards we continue to earn through swagbucks to spend on school materials.

So...

after saving up...and saving up...I finally purchased this last month:

A Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Except that I didn't really purchase it as I got it for FREE (which is so much better!)

This is the first fixed lens I've owned and it does take a little getting used to. But I'm excited about the narrower depth of field that is now at my fingertips, as well as better quality when working with low-light situations. I've enjoyed experimenting with it in my kitchen (hopefully a sign that more of our favorite recipes will find a way on here!) and have already had the opportunity to use it in several portrait sessions this month (photos coming soon!)

Oh -- and if you have not yet joined the swagbuck bandwagon -- you really should start.

I've been asking that question all week as Dan has been at a school conference in Oklahoma-- for the whole week!

I've definitely had things keeping me busy in hopes of helping time pass (like taking a trip back to Nebraska for a few days...a fabulous engagement photo shoot with my cousin and bachelorette party to celebrate the upcoming wedding...very successful shopping trips...playing with my nieces and nephew...putting my newly remodeled kitchen back together...etc...)

...but I miss him like c.r.a.z.y.

And now it is finally Saturday! He arrives home tonight! Hooray!

I love that man.

Over by the laundry corner in our house, there is another corner -- that has kind of been the 'catch-all' of our house. As days would come and go, so would 'stuff'. Different items would shift through and sit there and then be gone again as I decided where to store it, or whether to just get rid of whatever-it-was-that-didn't-have-a-place.

Ak! How uninviting and cluttered!

As time passed, I soon noticed that books were making up most of the piles sitting around in boxes. And no matter how many times I re-arranged the books already on the shelves, it still didn't create more room for those sitting on the floor.

(Cardboard boxes just didn't do the trick...)

After watching sales, we purchased two tall bookshelves --

May Highlights

Last month was filled with work, school, baking, studying, laundry, and all those normal routines of daily life. [grin]

But in between those typical days, we had company come visit! Which means taking some time off to do a lil' sightseeing, cruising in the convertible, and catching up with friends!

Washington DC is always a popular place to tour

Headed to see the White House.

After walking our feet off we were ready to sit down for a refreshing treat! Upon which I discovered a new weakness (and not for something chocolate, believe it or not) but for Pinkberry's frozen yogurt. Just in case you have never had the Pinkberry experience, just check out the picture below and see if it doesn't make you hungry...

And thanks so much for coming out to visit us, Grace! What a delight to have you visit for the weekend!

Then over Memorial Day weekend, more of Dan's siblings visited -- and we packed the weekend to its fullest!

Rain was in the forecast as we headed out, but we figured we'd still try to make it to the top --which we did! But after making our way back down and beginning the long walk to our car, the torrential downpour began! We were all completely soaked by the time we made it to the car. It was then such a welcoming feeling to arrive home, get out of the storm, and find that the slow-cooker had done its job as the delicious smell of supper wafted through the house.

We also went to DC for a day -- and rented bikes to get around.

We also played lots of volleyball, talked, ate, played games, stayed up way too late, and enjoyed hanging out. I'm so glad God designed families!!

And now Dan is busy studying and preparing for finals next week and life is somewhat back to routine. Hopefully I'll be more consistent in posting here -- yet I have a feeling this summer is going to fly by all too quickly!

But oftentimes we allow the things of this life, its pleasures, distractions and busyness to come between us and God's plan for our lives. Some of the biggest hindrances can be little things like possessions, money and entertainment. These things, although not bad in and of themselves, can rob us of the true calling God has for us."

The Hadley family was greatly impacted by his words and after much seeking, praying, and preparation, feel led to travel to Africa as missionaries.

There are others headed to far-away lands as well. Archibald is going to search for diamonds and expensive jewels...

And AdaBelle? She is taking her maid, Charlotte with her. Africa is just a slight detour as they are bound for the high society in Calcutta, India.

But things don't go as planned. After several weeks at see, a huge storm rocks the small ship...

"Land!! Watch out! We're going to run aground and crash!"

But Archibald begins making plans...

...and tells lies to the chief in hopes that he will learn where jewels might be hidden.

But plans backfire -- and instead of giving Archibald information, the chief decides to capture someone in retaliation!

Buttermilk Bread

2 cups lukewarm water

1 cup buttermilk

1 1/2 tablespoon yeast

1 1/2 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon honey

6 1/2 cups flour (I used a mixture of wheat, oatmeal and barley)

Mix the yeast, salt, and honey with the water and buttermilk. Mix in flour without kneading, using a spoon or a heavy-duty stand mixer with dough hook. If you're not using a machine, you may need to use wet hands to incorporate the last bit of flour. Cover (not airtight) and allow to rest at room temperature until the dough rises and collapses (or flattens on top), approximately 2 hours.

Lightly grease three 9x4x3 loaf pans. Dust the bread dough with flour, divide in thirds and quickly shape into balls by stretching the surface of the dough around to the bottom on all four sides, rotating the ball as you go. Elongate the ball into an oval.

Drop the dough into the prepared pan. You want to fill the pan slightly more than half full. Allow the dough to rise for 40 minutes. Place in preheated 350 degree oven. Bake the bread near the center of the oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from pan. Allow to cool completely before slicing as this is a very soft bread...

I found this recipe in a library book called Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day (and I really need to buy my own copy!) It is full of recipes and ideas! It shows you how to prepare bread dough and store it in the fridge for up to seven days -- which means you can have fresh bread all week with very little preparations!

Now I have my eye on a recipe called "Aunt Melissa's Granola Bread" using this granola recipe in the bread dough! Have any of you tried eating/baking granola bread before?

Several years ago as I was sorting through a box of papers and old family photos, I stumbled across a small, worn notebook. Curiously, I opened the pages and discovered an assortment of quotes, sayings, and poems -- all written in my mother's beautiful handwriting.

"During my teen years, when I read or heard something that inspired, encouraged, and challenged me, I wanted to write it down and keep record of it," Mommy replied to my questions about the small book. I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through it, reading little tidbits that had impressed her when she had been my age…

and I was inspired.

Which led to the habit of always (trying!) to have a pen and paper nearby when I read a book in order to copy down words that I found insightful. I also copied down short phrases from sermons...words of advice from my dad...special conversations with my sisters...excerpts pulled from a letter from a friend. These were all words I wanted to remember. Words I wanted to live by. Words that encouraged my heart. Words that made me smile. Words that challenged me to pursue Christ. Words that exhorted me to live whole heartedly. Words that made me laugh. Words that gave me much to ponder.

As time passed, I filled up my own little book.

and another one.

and another one!

And I have been blessed. When I first began my blog several years ago, my lil' book was the source of the inspiration for many, many posts, and still continues to be! For they are words that have encouraged me, and I pray -- bless you, too.

I think there is value in noting certain passages that are helpful. Recently I found a tiny book entitle “Gold Dust” that had been published in 1907. I enjoyed reading its preface, which summed it up quite well, I think:

"When you sometimes find in books advice or examples that you think may be of service, you take care to copy it... Write down the counsels and precepts that you hear or read; then, from time to time, study this little collection, which you will not prize the less that you have made it all yourself. This will be a collection of thoughts chosen because you liked them; counsels you have given yourself; moral receipts you have discovered, and of which, perhaps, you have proved the efficacy.

Gather then, these little counsels; gather them with watchfulness; let them for a moment penetrate deep into your heart; then scatter them abroad again, that they may go with their good words to the help of others. This is gold dust -- teachings which sparkle, enlighten, and inspire for a moment…."

Stovetop Granola

Melt oil in saucepan over medium.

(I used coconut oil and it added a delicious flavor to the granola)

Add old-fashioned rolled oats to the pan and toast for 4 minutes.

Spread the oatmeal on a cookie sheet to cool.

Using the same pan, melt butter, molasses, honey, vanilla, and a lil' brown sugar -- if you'd like.

Stir constantly till well mixed and bubbly.

Add oatmeal and a cup of any other dried fruits, seeds or nuts that you might prefer. (Sadly, I didn't have any on hand when I tried this recipe, but it still turned out fabulous! I'm sure it is only enhanced with your choice of toppings!)

Cook and stir for another 4-5 minutes.

Then spread on a cookie sheet to cool.

If you like little clusters of granola, spread it out very loosely and don't over-handle.

Place in a 170 degree oven for a few minutes. Turn oven off and let granola rest for another 2-3 minutes before removing from oven. Let cool and store in an airtight container. This gave me a perfect granola! But if you like a softer granola, skip this step altogether. If you prefer it more crunchy, let it remain in the oven for a little longer -- but watch it closely as it harden while cooling.

And there you have it!

Serve it up with some fruit and yogurt --

and breakfast is ready!

The specifics:

1 tablespoon oil

2 cups rolled oats

1/4 cup butter

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon molasses

1 cup dried fruit and nuts

(For those of you who have requested this bread recipe, hopefully I'll post it next week. I found the recipe in a library book and thought I had copied it before returning the book, but realized today that I hadn't! Oops! )

Our first anniversary

...was celebrated by going on a trip to the Bahamas on a cruise ship!

We had wanted to go on a cruise for our honeymoon, but timing-wise it just didn't work out. What a special blessing that Lord gave us the desire of our hearts a year later and worked out the details enabling us to go for our first anniversary! We had such a wonderful time! Nine amazing days to relax and enjoy time together, find a few new adventures, discover new foods, and delight in God's beautiful creation.

The ship departed from Baltimore, Maryland.

First stop: Key West, Florida

We saw the amazing butterflies, enjoyed the lil' touristy shops, climbed all the way up to the top of a lighthouse...and found ourselves ready for a snack!

And a cookie hit the spot...

...a half a pound of cookie, to be exact. [grin]

Our ship

We had several days at sea and enjoyed the time to talk, read, look back over the past year, and write out some goals for the coming year.

While at Paradise Island in the Bahamas, we were able to go snorkeling!

My man also took me for a thrilling jet-ski ride. What a blast! We rode the waves, caught some good air, and had only one spill.

CocoCay was another island we stopped at for the day.

While walking along the beach, we found this huge starfish! The water was so clear it was easy to see fish and other wildlife. (Though it didn't enable Dan to see the stingray buried in the sand...and he stepped on it!)

I love this man!

As I look back, I can't help but think of all our precious family and friends who blessed us in so many ways. They helped pull together so many details and truly supported us with their love, counsel, prayers, and excitement.

After the rehearsal, the Beasley's had prepared a delightful supper and evening. What a precious time to sit around and reflect on what God had done to bring us to this very day!

There is one book that I am always reading through: God's Holy Word. My structure for devotions occasionally changes, and in January Dan and I committed to reading through the entire Bible together in our first year of marriage. What a blessing it has been!

I'm also currently enjoying several other books:

I just started The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen. Though I've only read a few chapters, this book has already deepened my appreciation for what our Founding Fathers really did when they wrote our Constitution. I'm fascinated with history and am looking forward to growing in my understanding of the events that surrounded the birth of our nation.

I love reading miraculous accounts from the Bible about God's mighty acts on behalf of His people. I'm encouraged when I read about missionaries and heroes of faith who saw God's powerful hand at work as they pursued fulfilling the Great Commission. I also find it very exciting to find books that record stories of how God is working TODAY in such amazing ways across our world -- and For the Love of my Brothers is definitely one of those books. It is actually a continuation of the dramatic story of Brother Andrew's work among the suffering church. (His first book is God's Smuggler. If you haven't read either of them, I highly recommend that you do so).

At a slower pace, my husband and I are reading Conquer Your Fear, Share Your Faith together. We have been given so much and truly want to make the most of every opportunity the Lord sends our way. Desiring to always be ready to give an answer for the hope that is within us, we ordered a few tracts and are enjoying reading this book by Ray Comfort to better equip ourselves.

Also on my 'to read' list is Blog by Hugh Hewitt and Wrestling Prayer by Eric and Leslie Ludy.

Home from the grocery store!

I stopped at two local grocery stores and Rite Aid. The total came to $72.75, but after coupons I only spent $19.65!

I'm stocked up on meat so only needed milk, eggs, fresh fruit, and a few vegetables. All of the pasta, cleaning supplies, and candy were completely free after coupons. (My man will be excited about the candy...he has a sweet tooth that especially likes anything fruity and chewy!!) And just in case you counted the ten boxes of pasta, it is definitely more than the two of us can use -- so I'm excited about donating most of it to our church's food pantry!

TJ and Susan have been married for seven years and have four spunky, photogenic, adorable children. Susan is a photographer and I think she has some pretty cute lil' people to photograph. (This is a definite advantage to having children -- there are always priceless moments and expressions to capture!)

But this photo session was for the parents, who are still very, very much in love.

I want to be like Susan someday...

Seven years and four children later,

she wore her wedding dress and looks absolutely gorgeous!

Their children are blessed beyond measure to grow up in a home where they have an example of a husband and wife serving God together, enjoying life and each other.

I know, because I grew up in a home like that, too.

It is a marriage like theirs that really exemplifies Christ and the church.

And this handsome man with-whom-I'm-madly-in-love to camp with?!

Dan had a three day weekend (due to our nation celebrating Christopher Columbus' discovery of America!) and we wanted to make the most of it. We made plans to go camping on Assateague Island, bought a tent, and made the necessary preparations.

Except...we forgot to reserve a campsite until two days before we were hoping to be there!

Dan called and everything was packed. "Yes, there are always a few cancellations, but there is no way to be put on a waiting list." As we wondered what to do (and began mentioning different camping options), I prayed something would open up and that we'd be able to reserve it. As I made supper later that night, Dan checked the website. And sure enough -- a campsite was open!! And we jumped on it with excitement and thankfulness!

And we had such an incredible, incredible weekend.

We pulled in around 2 on Saturday -- and with the sun shining and perfect weather, we couldn't resist running to play in the ocean's waves.
Okay, so it started out as a walk on the beach, but soon someone threw the other person in. [grin]

We visited Chincoteague Island one afternoon, which was made famous by Marguerite Henry's book "Misty of Chincoteague". It was delightful to see the small, cozy town where so many stories took place that I'd read about as a young girl.

We had lots of time to relax, talk, read, sit around the campfire...
Sunday night we took a moonlit walk on the beach (talk about romantic!) then went and laid on the sand and enjoyed looking up at all the stars and naming constellations.

"The heavens will praise YOUR wonders...
For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD?
O LORD God of hosts, Who is might like YOU, O LORD?
YOUR faithfulness also surrounds YOU."

One afternoon as we sat on the beach, we were greatly amused by this little fellow. Someone had stepped on his home and he was busy clearing sand out. It was funny watching him bring up a claw-full of sand and pitch it away from the entrance to his home.

"You rule the raging of the sea;
When its waves rise, YOU still them.
The heavens are YOURS, the earth also is YOURS;
The world and all its fullness, YOU have founded them."

And our last evening there we had some surprise drop in company!
A mare and her foal stopped by as we were grilling supper, and they thoroughly sniffed everything. We were enjoying having them visit until they tried to eat our supper. Dan came to the rescue and guarded the food -- while I continued taking pictures.

Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
They walk, O LORD, in the light of YOUR countenance.

There are two ways to look at every situation: How it will affect you, and how it will affect God's kingdom. Often when we encounter a new situation, our first thoughts are not about God's kingdom. When we face a crisis, we can become fearful for our own well-being, rather than looking to see what God intends to do through out circumstances. If we remain self-centered we will miss so much of what God could do through our experiences, both for us and for those around us.

Ask God to make you aware of how He could use your present circumstances to bless others. Perhaps someone around you needs to see the difference Christ's presence makes in your life. Are you willing for God to use your circumstances to demonstrate His saving power to those around you?

One of God's most precious gifts to us is friends who encourage us and lovingly challenge us. According to scripture, a friend is one who challenges you to become all that God intends.

The mark of biblical friends is that their friendship draws you closer to Christ. They 'sharpen' you and motivate you to do what is right. It is equally important to examine the kind of friend you are to others. Strive to be the kind of friend that helps others become more like Christ.

Labor Day Weekend

We were only home for a few days, but we packed 'em full!
