Our Thanksgiving Heritage

In the year 1623, William Bradford declared the first Thanksgiving day --

To all ye Pilgrims:

In as much as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes, and garden vegetable, and has made the fruits to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as he has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience;

now I, your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between the hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday, November ye 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty-three, and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to ye pastor and render thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all His blessings.

William Bradford, Ye Governor of Ye Colony.

Today is to be "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, that all the people may assemble on that day to celebrate the praises of our Divine Benefactor; to confess our unworthiness of the least of his favours, and to offer our fervent supplications to the God of all grace...to cause the knowledge of Christianity to spread over all the earth."
-Issued by the Continental Congress on October 18, 1780

And our first president, George Washington, declared:

Our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experienced."

What are YOU thankful for today?

Bethany,

We truly do have so much to be grateful for! Our Heavenly Father has bestowed on us way more than we deserve. In fact...we deserve nothing. Yet, He not only gives us everything pertaining to life, but also to godliness. What an awesome God we serve!

With a grateful heart,
Abi

I am thankful that our country has Christian roots, and I was raised by parents who understand God's love and forgiveness! Great quotes!
